The half most apps skip

Exposure is half of ERP. The other half is what you don't do.

Response prevention is choosing not to perform the compulsion once the anxiety has been triggered. Most apps record the exposure and leave that part out, which is the part that makes ERP work. In Marea, every rung carries a rule alongside the task — composed from the compulsions you describe, including the ones that happen in your head: replaying, checking how you feel, asking someone if it's okay.

A rule on every rungWhat you won't do afterwards, kept in view during the session.

What Marea does

Four steps, and nothing extra

Build

Turn avoidance into a ladder

  • Name what sets off the obsession, and order it the way that makes sense to you
  • Graded from mildly uncomfortable to genuinely hard
  • Give each rung an expected distress rating
  • You decide when a rung is cleared — nothing moves on its own
Marea exposure ladder — rungs graded by expected distress, cleared when you decide

Run

Stay with it, without the ritual

  • A timer that counts up, rather than down
  • Your response-prevention rule kept in view the whole time
  • Log a distress rating as often as you want one
  • Ending early isn't failure; it's information

Watch

See the number come down on its own

  • Distress drawn minute by minute, with the peak marked
  • Session by session, the same rung's peak drops
  • Drawn from your own entries — nothing invented, nothing estimated
Marea session summary — distress rising to a peak and falling with no ritual in between

Share, if you want to

Hand a clinician the record

  • A one-page PDF summary of a ladder
  • Tasks, rules, dates, and start, peak and end ratings
  • Nothing else is in it — no notes, no reflections
  • Created on your phone and shared only when you choose
Marea Today screen — the next rung, with last session's peak and end distress

Privacy

Nothing leaves this phone

Questions

Marea — frequently asked

Is there an app for exposure and response prevention?

Yes — Marea is built for exactly that. It helps you build an exposure ladder, attach a response-prevention rule to every rung, run timed sessions and see how your distress changes over time. It works on your own or between sessions with a therapist.

Why does ERP matter for OCD?

The International OCD Foundation describes ERP, alongside medication, as the treatment shown through extensive research to be the most effective for OCD. It has two halves: exposure, which is confronting what provokes the obsession, and response prevention, which is choosing not to perform the compulsion afterwards.

Can I do ERP on my own?

Many people practise it between sessions or while on a waiting list, and Marea is built for that. It is not a substitute for a clinician, though — ERP tends to go best with someone who knows your history. If OCD is severely interfering with your life, please speak to a professional.

What is an exposure ladder?

A list of the situations you avoid, ordered from mildly uncomfortable to genuinely hard. You work up it one rung at a time. In Marea you write your own — nine rungs or ninety — and you decide when a rung is cleared; nothing moves on its own.

Does Marea help with mental compulsions?

Yes. Response-prevention rules are composed from the compulsions you describe, including the ones that happen in your head — replaying, checking how you feel, asking someone if it's okay. These are the rituals most apps have no way to capture.

Why doesn't Marea reassure me?

Because in OCD, reassurance is usually the compulsion. Marea never tells you a fear is unlikely, never says you're safe, and never answers "could I have done it?". There is no AI, no chatbot and no community for the same reason — nothing that could be asked.

Can I use it alongside therapy?

Yes, and that is one of the main reasons it exists. You can export a one-page summary of a ladder as a PDF — its tasks, rules, session dates and start, peak and end ratings — to hand to a clinician. It contains nothing else.

Why are there no streaks or reminders to log?

Because each of those has an OCD-specific way of becoming a ritual. Five weeks off leaves no mark, and ending a session early isn't failure; it's information. There is no daily check-in asking how anxious you are.

Is Marea private?

Yes. There is no account, no ads, no analytics and no crash reporting, and Marea makes no network requests. Everything you enter stays in encrypted storage on your phone. Backups are a single file you keep, locked with a passphrase only you know.

Is Marea free?

Yes. Marea is currently free, with no ads and no account.

Is Marea a replacement for therapy or a medical device?

No. Marea is a self-guided practice companion. It is not a medical device, does not diagnose OCD, and is not a substitute for a clinician. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, contact a crisis line or emergency service — Marea lists crisis lines in Settings, and they work offline.
